Fun in the Ice

posted in: personal news, quirky 0

It’s been a funny winter, here in the Boston area. Here it is, mid-February, and we still haven’t had a proper snowfall. On the other hand, yesterday was a carnival of sleet, sleet mixed with snow, and freezing sleet. Last night and today, everything was ice—including the snowplow ridges at the ends of the driveways. Ours was no treat to get out of, but we were better off than a neighbor who decided to drive over the ridge.

Here is the result, caught by my cell phone camera.

It’s been a winter of extremes here in Indiana. First of all other than one cold week at the beginning of Dec it didn’t even feel like winter until about half-way through January (I have the low gas bills to prove it!). But once it did kick in yikes! Since about 3-4 weeks ago I don’t think the temperature has gone above freezing once and nights w/ temps below 0 and daytime temps not even making up to 20 have been the norm. I’m afraid of the gas bill that’s about to show up now! On top of that this past week we had what long-time locals around here are calling the worst snow storm since the big one in ’78. And yeah we got somewhere between 12 and 15 inches and the wind did create drifts as high as 4 or 5 feet in places (including around my cars of course so I had a lot of digging to do!). After living in Syracuse, NY for 10 years of my life though, it didn’t seem all that terrible to me, just another winter day, but people around here aren’t used to getting more than a few inches at a time and they aren’t nearly so practiced at getting the streets cleared properly so it does make for a bit of an adventure when you have to go somewhere. At this point i’m hoping the groundhog was right and we have an early spring, because even though it took a while for winter to get here it’s been intense since it arrived and i’m ready for global warming to kick in about now! *L*

I was literally using a pick-axe to try and clear the sidewalk.

Our neighbor tried to use a pick-axe and succeeded only in breaking the handle. Fortunately, the weather has been milder than predicted the last couple of days, so we’ve been able to make progress in clearing the stuff away.
